Another stunning state tournament is in store for class D. Last year’s race came down to the final day where Burwell found big wins on the back side of the brackets to secure the win. A similar fashion will unfold this year as Plainview, Burwell, Aquinas Catholic, and Shelby Rising City all look to be in the hunt for a state title.

Plainview holds the top spot with 6 big contenders for state medals. These six can get the job done if they find their way to the top of the podium. 106 will be a key weight class for Plainview. With Aquinas and Burwell each having top 106 wrestlers the finish to this weight class could dictate how the tournament is won. Look for the Frahm boys at 132 and 190 to find a way to state and score points for the pirates.

Burwell returns a great portion of their dual team but will need to lean on their depth to find points at the state tournament. Leading the way are their returning state champs Brody Jensen and Drew Dawe. The season is already off to a great start with guys like Trentin Brown, Michael Hunter, Cort Buss, Kolton Thoene, Kason Larson, and Tyson Welton finding big wins and showing that they are capable of winning matches at the state tournament. If Burwell can find 9-10 guys down at the state tournament that will elevate their chances of going Back to Back Champs.

Aquinas Catholic reloaded and found a nice boost to their team in Jayden Schommer at 106. His freshmen campaign has hit their ground running and proves why he is #1 in the state. Aquinas Catholic also brings great depth to the season. With Aquinas, Amherst, and Burwell all in the same district and possible 3 of the top 5 dual teams in the state. Aquinas will look to find a few extra guys like Seth Hlavac, Cash Truska, Landon Pohl, and Emmett Kadavy to set them for a deep tournament run.

Shelby Rising City will be a fun team to watch on Championship Saturday. They will bring the dogs to the fight, but the question will be how many will they bring. The Huskies have the big point capability starting with their returning state champ Eli Fjell and Vrbka brothers both sitting at the top of the rankings. If they can find growth in 3 to 4 more guys on their team they can go toe to toe with any team at the state tournament.
